About Lisa Thoennes

I have worked in the field of Special Education for over 35 years, as a teacher for 15 years and as a Special Education Administrator for over 20 years. My entire career has been devoted to the field of Severe Social/Emotional and Behavioral disabilities as well as Learning Disabilities, Neurotypical challenges and Developmental difficulties. I have started new schools and have been a member of Colorado state-wide administrative teams. My work with schools in multiple states has provided experience working with school professionals in Florida, California, New Jersey, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, New York as well at The Colorado Department of Education and the State Department of the United States.

I have the perspective of  a School District Coordinator, a Private School Special Education Director, a private advocate and consultant and as a parent of a special needs child.

My process begins with actively listening to the concerns presented, creating an effective communication loop with the family and school, reviewing school and family documents, and discussing options. My communication style is highly collaborative and engages families and students to learn about their rights and how to navigate the special education process to avoid further conflict or misunderstandings.
